Additional Details

a rare grouping of nine pairs of covers by f.k. kummel, new york stationer, before and after coloring: "Off for the War," Liberty holding the flag, her foot appears to be on a globe "Lafayette We are Grateful" "Union and Happiness," Liberty standing by the flag "Memory of the Gallant Officers and Men who Fell at the Battle of Bull Run" "Union," a complex image, showing liberty holding the flag and standing in a sort of "cup" made of golden leaves, the American Eagle at her side and "To the Memory of Ellsworth, May 24, 1861," and an exceptional image of Liberty, leaning on her shield, with a tiny portrait of George Washington in the center of it. All are typical of the intricate engraving and distinct coloring produced by the house of F.K. Kummel. According to Grant's Handbook of Civil War Patriotic envelopes and Postal History (1974-75), Kummel only issued 25 covers.
