With the original envelope, addressed in her hand. [New York], 4 November [1969].

The drawing, a sketch of a person wearing jack-o-lantern mask waving and asking, "Hello / did you have / a neat / Halloween?," on front cover and a skull and crossbones on the back of the envelope. The note, inquiring about her Halloween and mentioning a birthday gift she gave to Robert [Mapplethorpe], "Did you go out trick or treating? What did you wear?

"Thanks for the letters. I'm glad you like the books. By the way, keep me posted on what you're interested [in] or what types of books you'd like. Today is Robert's Birthday (Nov. 4). I bought him real neat stuff, including a silver scull [sic] ring! Write soon. I'm thinking of you."

Friends and partners from their earliest days in New York City, Smith and Mapplethorpe lived and worked closely together as lovers and muses: In 1969 they moved together into the Chelsea Hotel and in 1975 he shot the photograph used on the cover of her first album, Horses.
