PAUL ALBERT BESNARD & ROBERT BESNARD (1849-1934) TALLOIRES. Circa 1910.
42 1/4x31 inches. Ateliers F. Hugo D'Alesi, Paris.
Condition A.
Albert Besnard was an academic painter with an illustrious and honored career. He won the Grand Prix de Rome, was the director of the École des Beaux-Arts, and was appointed (after Puvis de Chavannes) as the artist chosen to adorn French monuments with frescos. Like many other official artists of the time he also tried his hand in the poster field. For this particular travel poster, designed with his son Robert Besnard, he proved that he could successfully master this new medium. On the shores of Lake Annecy, where the French Alps reach the water's edge, the natural beauty of the location has entranced visitors for centuries, and the Besnards depict a stylish couple admiring the breath taking view. Le Train 131, Hillion p. 178, Karcher 402.
