Margaret Hoening French (1889-1973) was a landscape and figure artist born in New Jersey and trained at the Art Students League, New York. She married Jared French in 1937 and, along with French and Cadmus, was a central figure in the PaJaMa group; the three artists shared a similar erotic aesthetic and produced paintings, drawings and photographs staging themselves and their friends/lovers (George Platt Lynes, see lot 244; George Tooker; Monroe Wheeler; Lincoln Kirstein) in many of their works from the 1930s and 1940s.
