PAUL CADMUS
Reclining Male Nude (JF 1).

Pen and ink on cream wove paper, 1933. 142x331 mm; 5 5/8x13 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Mallorca" in ink, lower right recto, and inscribed "JF 1" in pencil, lower left recto. Ex-collection Midtown Galleries, New York, with the label.

Cadmus and Jared French, who served as the model for this drawing and at the time was Cadmus's lover, arrived in Mallorca in 1931 after they had sailed to Europe on an oil tanker and bicycled through France and Spain.

During their stay in Mallorca in the early 1930s, Cadmus started painting American themes which would become some of the most important works of his career, notably the Bicyclists; The Fleet's In! and YMCA Locker Room.
