PAUL CADMUS
West 10th and West Streets.

Black crayon on cream wove paper, 1927. 215x367 mm; 8 1/2x14 1/2 inches. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower left recto.

Cadmus (1904-1999) was born and raised in New York City. His parents were both artists; his father Egbert Cadmus studied with Robert Henri and worked as a commercial lithographer, and his mother Maria Latasa was an illustrator of children's books. Cadmus maintained his roots in Manhattan throughout his life, studying at the National Academy of Design, and later enrolling at the Arts Students League while he was employed as a layout artist at an advertising agency. The current lot demonstrates Cadmus' aptitidue for depicting urban settings in his signature realist style.
