PAUL COLIN (1892-1985)

WEEK END CIGARETTES. 1933.

58x36¾ inches, 147¼x93¼ cm. Bedos et Cie, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, abrasions and minor overpainting at edges and in image; creases and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners; small replaced losses in upper image. Framed.

This is one of the most inventive of Paul Colin's commercial posters. Against a grass-green background, suggestive of the leisure implied by the product's name, Colin shows an almost bird's-eye view of three people relaxing and enjoying their cigarettes. The perspective, the colors and the use of the diagonal provide a very striking image. Colin may have been inspired by the similarity the motion of opening a hinged pack of cigarettes has with unfolding a deck chair.
