PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) LA NUIT DE LA FOURRURE. 1928. 221/4x153/4 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition A-: restored losses in top left corner. The Paris cultural season consisted not only of opera, theatre and Music Hall performances, but also of Charity Balls, where everyone who was anyone felt the need to see and be seen. Colin regularly designed the posters for these events. In 1930, he designed a poster for perhaps the most famous "Bal," "Le Bal des Petits Lits Blancs" [Small White Beds Ball] which helped raise money for children's hospitals. In 1927, he designed the poster for "Bal Fleuri" (held at the Theatre des Champs-Elysee) again to raise money for children in need and in 1928 he designed this poster for the "Night of Fur," held in the very posh Claridge Hotel on the Champs-Elysee to raise money to rebuild a village destroyed during the war. An elegant woman wrapped in a fur coat and her top-hatted escort are ascending a staircase. To highlight the magnificent fur coat and to give the image more depth, Colin places the man below the woman, making her larger. The sophisticated pink background not only emphasizes the silvery lustre of the coat, but, with the arches placed at an incongruous angle, adds a strange and fascinating majesty to the image.
