PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) SILENCE. 1939.
23 1/4x15 inches, 59x38 cm.
Condition A-: minor abrasions in image.
Here, "with imagination and a touch of humor" (Zeman p. 61), Colin illustrates how seditious the enemy can be by presenting slightly comic, unsuspecting gray figures of a soldier and a civilian talking against a dark blue background where a lurking black shadow of "The Enemy" is listening. Colin's technique, of using indistinct silhouette, was so effective, that this image "was engraved onto the collective conscience of the French of that time" (Colin p. 112). Colin 157, Weill 499. This is the smaller format.
