PAUL GAUGUIN
Te Atua.

Woodcut on thin wove Japan paper, 1899. 221x225 mm; 8 3/4x9 inches, full margins. Second state "A" (of 2 "D"). Edition of approximately only 30. A very good impression of this extremely scarce woodcut.

Mongan, Kornfeld and Joachim note that Gauguin printed around 30 impressions from the block in this completed state, many but not all of which are numbered (an impression once owned by Mette Gauguin is unnumbered). Gauguin also printed another 35 impressions which he pasted on first state impressions to create a chiaroscurro effect. There were also posthumous impressions made from the block in 1920-22 (on heavy wove paper) and 1961 (on various Japan papers). Kornfeld 53.
