Günther Wagner, who owned Pelikan from the early 1870s onwards, paid a lot of attention to promotion and advertising. He commissioned artwork by some of the world's leading designers (including Ludwig Hohlwein and El Lissitzky), but he also focused on the packaging in an attempt to brand his product and make it immediately identifiable and recognizable to consumers. This archetypal Sachplakat helps to achieve that desired effect. Die Kunst zu Werben p. 180, DFP-III 1496.
