Study for a Figure of an Archer for the Comédie-Française.

Black chalk on thin cream wove paper mounted on heavy wove paper. 425x290 mm; 16 3/4x11 1/2 inches. Signed, titled and dedicated "à mon ami Albert Goupil" in chalk, lower left recto.

The dedicatee, Goupil (1840-1884) was the youngest son of the publisher Adolphe Goupil (1806-1893), who founded the eponymous firm centered around fine art photography and photographic reproductions. He was associated with the direction of Goupil & Cie, Paris, from 1872 to his early death in 1884.
