PAUL KAMMÜLLER (1885-1946) STADTKASINO. 1918.
41 1/2x28 1/2 inches, 105 1/2x72 1/2 cm. W. Wassermann, [Basel.]
Condition A: minor creases and scuffing in image. Framed. Unexamined out of frame.
German-born Kammüller studied art in Basel, Munich (under Franz von Stück), Paris (at the Académie Julian) and Florence. He spent much of his life teaching but was also active in many different artistic fields including painting, fresco, illustration and graphic design. Here, promoting Basel's elegant and luxurious Stadtkasino, Kammüller literally invites us into the warm, colorful, intimate interior via the gesture of a tuxedoed young man pulling back a black curtain. The sumptuous colors and textures within the brightly-illuminated hall stand out sharply against the black of the curtain, which melds seamlessly into the young host's jacket. Hotelplakate 54.
