Abstract Composition.

Collage and pencil on heavy, tan wove paper, circa 1920. Signed in pencil, lower left recto. A scarce example of the artist's early Constructivist work.

German-born Constructivist and muralist Paul Kelpe (1902-1985) moved to the United States in 1925 where he attended the University of Chicago. In the 1930s he created murals for the Federal Art Project, WPA, at Southern Illinois University and the Williamsburg Housing Project in New York. A founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, he taught at East Texas Teachers College and retired to Austin, Texas.
