German-born Constructivist and muralist Paul Kelpe (1902-1985) moved to the United States in 1925 where he attended the University of Chicago. In the 1930s, he created murals for the Federal Art Project, WPA, at Southern Illinois University and the Williamsburg Housing Project in New York. A founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, he taught at East Texas Teachers College and retired to Austin, Texas. Kelpe was a friend of and lived across the street from Grace Schroeder, an Austin-based artist.
