Meltsner (1905-1966) was born and raised in New York. After studying at the National Academy of design, he began working as an illustrator. He is best known for his social realist work under the aegis of the Federal Arts Project, WPA. He toured the United States in an old Ford, visiting farms and factories and collecting subject matter for his paintings and prints.
