With a stylish crescent of beach reminiscent of the French travel posters by Roger Broders, Proehl depicts the shoreline along Lake Michigan, with the towers of Chicago's Gold Coast visible in the distance. On the beach, a spray of colorful bathers are congregating, swimming and laying out under their umbrellas. The proximity of the beach to the city is emphasized by several men wearing business suits. Proehl, trained as an architect, became a prominent illustrator and advertising artist. This is one in a series of stylish images Proehl created for the Illinois Central Railroad, all of which featured prominent, beautiful young women. rare. Zega p. 87.
