PAUL SANDBY
Collection of 68 etchings.

Bound volume with 68 etchings, circa 1747-56. 1/2-brown calf and brown linen binding, covers worn. A comprehensive collection of mid-18th-century etchings including landscapes, genre scenes, portraits, caricatures and prints executed in the manner of earlier old master printmakers. Various sizes and conditions.

Sandby (1725-1809) is best known as one of the most accomplished English landscape watercolorists of the 18th-century. Many of his topographical watercolors were reproduced as color aquatints in portfolio format. His printed oeuvre ranks with Hogarth's, with whom he was at odds over Hogarth's opposition to creating a public academy for the arts, as the strongest English caricature of the era.
