PAUL SCHEURICH (1883-1945) I. H. BOSTELMANN. 1913.
22 7/8x17 3/4 inches, 58x45 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: minor tears and creases in margins and image; foxing in lower image. Paper.
In Berlin, Scheurich worked for the renowned printer Hollerbaum & Schmidt. In the years before the First World War, they were known not only for the quality of their lithography but also the impressive stable of artists they employed: Lucian Bernhardt, Hans Rudi Erdt and Julius Klinger. Scheurich's style was much like his counterparts in that it was heavily influenced by the British school, employing flat tones and no outlining. For the subjects of his posters, he generally relied on Berlin's bourgeoisie and working class. For this beer company (founded in 1753), however, he depicts a proud brewer in 18th century garb leaning on a barrel of beer. DFP III 2894.
