Paul Sharits (1943-1993) is primarily known for his impact in the experimental and structural film movements of the 1960s and 1970s, utilizing endless film loops, multiple projectors and experimental soundtracks. His goal was to create a participatory and visceral experience for his viewers and even in his later works on canvas his work remained psychological and tactile.
Sharits began to experiment with painting again in 1980, using it to explore themes of decay, medical pathology, body parts and disease (see lots 158 and 159), prompted by the death of his brother, and his involvement in two incidents where he was stabbed and shot. The current lot melds his interest in film and his renewed interest in painting, as the stripes represent the distortion that he frequently achieved by scratching and manipulating film.
