PAUL TAYLOR (1895-1984)
Dorothea Lange in Texas. Silver print, the image measuring 8 3/4x7 3/8 inches (22.2x18.7 cm.), the sheet 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), with an Oakland Museum label with an alternate credit, title, and negative date, on verso. 1934; printed 1980s

Additional Details

The label on the verso of this photograph credits Robert J. Doherty for the image. Doherty, a photographer and scholar, was curator of the photography collection at the Hite Art Institute. He was later director of the George Eastman Museum and wrote extensively, including on social documentary photography. He contributed an introduction to Lange's book Farm Security Administration photographs, 1935-1939: From the Library of Congress (1980). However, this photograph is most often attributed to Lange's husband Paul Taylor, including in the PBS documentary on Lange titled Grab a Hunk of Lightning (2014).
