Additional Details

By the time this drawing was created in 1938, Tchelitchew was already a successful modern artist exhibiting internationally. He arrived in the United States in October 1934, the same year of his first solo exhibition at Julien Levy Gallery in New York. Towards the end of 1936, Tchelitchew used silverpoint often, favoring the precise linear contours the medium offered. He would use silverpoint extensively from 1937 to 1938 to draw portraits and landscapes, like the present lot.
