Tchelitchew (1898-1957) and his partner, Charles Henri Ford (1908-2002) were part of a New York circle of queer artists and writers during the mid 20th century. Wheeler (1899-1988), a publisher and curator at The Museum of Modern Art, New York and his partner Glenway Wescott (1901-1987) were also members of this group as well as Paul Cadmus (1904-1999, see lots 123-126), George Platt Lynes (1907-1955), Christian William Miller (1921-1955) and George Tooker (1920-2011).
