PAVEL TCHELITCHEW
Sleeping Mountain.

Pen and ink on buff wove paper, 1939. 170x325 mm; 16 3/4x17 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right. Paper losses upper sheet edge.

A similar composition and same-titled study is illustrated in Pavel Tchelitchew Drawings, New York, 1970, p.20 and ill. p. 37. Kirstein describes how these drawings were made in June-July of 1939 at Saint Jorioz, Lac d'Annecy, Haute Savoie, France. They were related to the painting Fata Morgana in the collection of Edward James, London, and to a series of metamorphic landscape drawings.
