Friedeberg (born 1936) is a Mexican artist and designer known for his surrealist work utilizing ancient and religious symbols. Perhaps his best known work is the Hand-Chair a sculptural chair designed for people to sit on the palm, with the fingers as back and arm rests. Friedeberg studied as an architect, but abandoned conventional designs in favor of absurdist concepts in the 1950s, having been influenced by Dada and Surrealism. Eventually, Friedeberg became associated with various surrealist artists in Mexico, including Leonora Carrington and Alice Rahon.
