Portrait Studies of Fiorello La Guardia.

Black crayon on cream wove paper, circa 1935. 340x235 mm; 13 1/2x9 3/4 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto.

Ex-collection Kraushaar Galleries, Inc., New York, with the label; private collection, Chicago.

La Guardia (1882-1947) was a three term Mayor of New York from 1934-45. As a pro-New Deal liberal progressive Republican, he supported President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), a Democrat, and revitalized New York during the Great Depression: unifying the transit system, directing the building of low-cost public housing, public playgrounds, and parks, constructing airports, reorganizing the police force, defeating the powerful Tammany Hall political machine and re-establishing employment on merit in place of patronage jobs.
