PERCIVAL ALBERT (PERCY) TROMPF (1902-1964) ACROSS AUSTRALIA / TRANS - AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY. 1935.

Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears at edges. Mounted on thick paper.
Begun in 1912, the Trans-Australian Railway wasn't completed until 1917. Covering over 1,050 miles, and connecting Port August with Kalgoorlie, the line, at one point, runs 309 miles without making a turn, creating the longest stretch of straight track anywhere in the world. As the line runs through the rough, arid and vast Australian desert, ads like this one needed to tout the luxury of the transportation. In addition to an inset showing a well-appointed salon car with a piano, lounge chairs, electric lights and more, the poster also shows an aborigine watching the train pass--an intimation of the great modernity of the system compared to the old days.
