PETER NEWELL (1862-1924)
"The Way We Bow."

Illustration "drawn by Peter Newell especially for the Blue and Gold," published by the junior class of the University of California, 1900. Watercolor and ink on paper, adhered to board. 218x283 mm; 8½x11 inches (image). 14⅜x17 inches (mat). Signed and dated in lower left image. Accompanied by original typewritten label with caption.

The Blue and Gold was the yearbook for the University of California. The illustration accompanied a short poem, "His Salutation. Sometimes the milk boy, Peter Broom (at least so goes the story), Will bow before an early bloom, and say "Good morning-glory." The acknowledgements thank the many friends of the university who contributed to the publication, including "Mr. Peter Newell, of New Jersey . . . for excellent drawings."
