PETER GRIPPE
Running Figure.

Engraving, 1945. 101x150 mm; 4x6 inches, full margins. One of only approximately 4 or 5 proofs (there was no published edition). Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "3" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.

Predominantly known as a sculptor working in clay and bronze, Peter Grippe (1912-2002) oversaw the completion of the 1960 portfolio 21 Etchings and Poems, a famous collaboration of poets, including Frank O'Hara, Thomas Merton and Dylan Thomas, and Abstract Expressionist artists, including Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning (see lot 502). When Hayter ceased activity at Atelier 17 in New York to return to Paris in 1950, Grippe was one of the studio directors (along with Karl Schrag, Terry Haass and Leo Katz) before it finally closed down in 1955.
