PETER HUJAR (1934-1987)

Ethyl Eichelberger as Lucretia Borgia.
Offset poster, 381x279 mm, 15x11 inches. [New York,] 1982.

"In the 1980s, Ethyl Eichelberger wrote, directed, and starred in thirty-two critically-acclaimed plays which were based on the lives of strong women from history, including Nefertiti, Media, and Clytemnestra, among many others. Performing in drag, Eichelberger also played the accordion, experimented with fire-eating, and incorporated acrobatics into the highly frenetic productions, which were produced in downtown performance spaces such as The Pyramid, Dixon Place, s.n.a.f.u., Limbo Lounge and P.S. 122. In addition to tirelessly presenting his own works, Eichelberger was a member of Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company as an actor and the primary wig designer. After years of progressive deterioration due to an HIV infection, in 1990, at the age of 45, he committed suicide in the Staten Island home of his friend and Ridiculous Theatre compatriot John Brockmeyer."
