PETER MAX (1937 - ) TOULOUSE LAUTREC. 1967.
36x24 inches.
Condition A.
Peter Max was one of the earliest, and certainly the most enduring, of the psychedelic artists in the 1960s. He was one of the most prolific creators of decorative posters, all of which bore his distinctive strong pop colors and ornate decorative patterns. Like so many others involved in the field, he was heavily influenced by the graphic art of the Art Nouveau era. Toulouse Lautrec is his most famous poster, and remains an icon of the decade. "A black and white portrait photograph of the artist, surmounted by the English bowler he wore is the starting point. Funky lettering inside the hat, bursting with lavender and pink and a range of colors in a mottled medley, spelled out his name. Look closer, however, and you will recognize that the letters are not just marbleized color harmonies, but a tinted sepia Bouguerean print of women en deshabille. Max's allusion to the way Lautrec delved into the demimonde." Peter Max p. 26, Images 61.
