Sale 2101 - Lot 95

Unsold
Estimate: $ 4,000 - $ 6,000
PETER PAUL RUBENS (STUDIO OF)
(Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp)
Head of a Young Man.

Black chalk on cream laid paper mounted on laid paper. 121x105 mm; 4 7/8x4 1/8 inches. Ex-collection Joshua Reynolds, on his mount inscribed with his name and with the inventory number "95" in ink (see Lugt 2364).

Likely a study for Daniel in the Lion's Den, oil, 1628, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, but possibly also a study for The Raising of the Cross, oil, 1610, Antwerp.

In the estate sale of Reynolds's drawings at A. C. de Poggi, London, in 1794, there are a total of 22 drawings listed by Rubens. As Lugt notes, however, the auctioneers offer only minimal cataloguing on the lots, in most cases only the names of the artists.
