Inscribed by Peterson on the front endpaper: "To Claire Kelly, charmer of serpents - why not try the birds? - Roger T. Peterson (Dictator) - C.M. Beal (Interpreter)". While she was a student at Cornell, Claire Kelly dated Peterson's personal assistant C.M. Beal and at the time she was also working with snakes at the Museum of Natural History. In his signing, Peterson playfully ties this all together. First edition, third state (date on copyright only, bog-pumper correct in the index, printed overlays to the color plates, and "clean" wings of the swans and egrets.
