Il Petrarca. 184, [16] leaves. 8vo, 158x97mm, 18th-century red morocco gilt, joints starting, small stain on front cover; varying soiling and foxing, occasionally heavy, title and around 30 other leaves trimmed and inlaid to size without text loss, title stained, with CAR[O]L[U]S(?) painted in gold on red panel beneath emblem of heart and ribbon. Third Aldine edition of the Canzoniere after the first Aldine of 1501. From the libraries of Ambroise Firmin-Didot, with his bookplate (lot 350 in his sale, 10-14 June 1884) and Louis-Alexandre Barbet (lot 409 in his sale, 7-10 November 1932), described in both their auction catalogues as having belonged to Charles I of England.
