P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN)

SALON DES CENT. 1897.

23 1/2x15 1/2 inches, 59 1/2x39 1/4 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: repaired tears at edges; reds slightly attenuated. Matted and framed.

Lobel's entire artistic legacy consists of only a few lithographs and two prestigious posters; one for the print dealer Pierrefort, and this one, for the 31st Salon des Cent. It is a shame that he didn't create more work, as his style reflects an intimate familiarity with Toulouse-Lautrec and the precepts of the Nabis. Here, the layout, drawing quality and masterly use of lithography (using the white of the paper to create the net) all show the marks of a first-rate artist. This is the version with text.
