P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN) CHEZ PIERREFORT. 1897.
31 1/2x25 inches, 80x64 cm. Edw. Ancourt, Paris.
Condition B-: restored losses, repaired tears, staining and restoration in margins and image; sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
Pierrefort was one of three major print dealers who also specialized in posters in fin-de-siecle Paris (the others being Sagot and Arnould). He employed Ibels, Thiriet and Lobel to design advertisements for his business. Little is known about Lobel. He was obviously influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec, and clearly he was held in high esteem by his contemporaries, as in addition to this poster he was commissioned to design one for the prestigious Salon des Cent. The image presents a confident young beauty seated in an Art Nouveau style armchair perusing the selection in Pierrefort's gallery, while an older print lover in the background also admires a print. From the flat colors and the color scheme, to the use of outlining and perspective, this poster bears a startling resemblance to works by Toulouse-Lautrec himself. Extremely rare. Only one other copy of this poster is known. Affichomanie 5, Wine Spectator 61 (var).
