PHILIBERT-PAUL CHARBONNIER (1866-?) SALON DES CENT. 1895.
18x241/2 inches. L. Audrourg & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: creases in margins and image; minor loss in image; vertical and horizontal folds. Paper.
Promoting a group show at the Salon, this is one of the rarer works in the Salon des Cent series. Given the great artistic talents at his disposal, it is an excellent example of the eclectic, democratic taste that Deschamps brought to the public eye. The simple image, in flat planes of color, is extremely stylized and treats nature in an almost calligraphic manner. Unlike many other members of the group, Charbonnier is almost completely unknown to the world of Art History. Salon des Cent p. 29, Neumann p. 72.
