Although Phillipps's library of printed books was of secondary importance compared to his manuscripts, "one cannot ignore a collection of perhaps forty thousand volumes, containing nearly a thousand incunabula, including Caxton's Recuyell of 1474, a First Folio Shakespeare and half a dozen Quartos, as well as what was probably the finest collection of bibliography, British and European history, topography and genealogy in private hands in the middle of the nineteenth century . . . Work [on a catalogue of the library] began in earnest in 1827: in that year and 1828 a 51-page alphabetical catalogue was printed at Phillipps's own press by Edwyn Offer, the edition being limited to six copies only. In 1838 started the series of supplements which were still in progress at the time of Phillipps's death in 1872 . . .
