Descharnes was a photographer and filmmaker, but his real claim to fame was as Salvador Dali's seceretary. According to Sotheby's, Descharnes and Dali actually met for the first time aboard the SS America (a ship in the United States Line fleet), where they were introduced by the painter Georges Mathieu, a fellow traveler. This photographic image of the SS United States is as powerful as any graphic depiction of a liner, and speaks to Descharnes' cinematic background.
