Thriving as a cabaret and opera singer in the 1920s and 1930s, Marie Dubas created the first one-woman show in France, infusing her melodic performances with comedy and dance to the delight of the Parisian crowds. "Endowed with an unusual stage presence, with a repertoire both whimsical and dramatic, Marie Dubas embodied the French song in all its forms" (Notre Mèmoire Collective). This promotional poster employed the photographic skills of Studio Piaz to enumerate the breadth of her emotive and performance skills. Jewish, Dubas was exiled during the Second World War, however she returned to France in 1945 and continued her career through 1952. She retired having created several quintessential "chanson Française," and inspired countless other singers, including Edith Piaf.
