PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947) L'ESTAMPE ET L'AFFICHE. 1897.
31 3/4x23 3/4 inches, 80x60 cm. Pelletan Aux Editions d'Art, Paris.
Condition B: creases and abrasions in margins and image; foxing and overall fading in margins and image. Framed.
L'Estampe et l'Affiche was a magazine devoted to prints and posters during the two years it was published, it was a mainstay of the print and poster collecting community. It has been written that the image displays an allegory of the print and the poster themselves, embodied in the forms of a young girl (the poster) and an old woman (the print). However that interpretation is wrong in light of the actual image (in which the young girl is carrying prints) and the purpose of the magazine which was to promote the collecting of both prints and posters. Bonnard's image, using only three colors, is a charming allegory of the life and spirit imbued in collecting prints. It shows a young collector coming home in such a hurried and excited state that some prints are actually falling out of her huge portfolio. An older woman, who represents a different generation of collectors who do not understand all the rage surrounding paper, bemusedly observes her process. The freely drawn typography literally invades the image, with prominence of placement and the bold white color of the paper given to the word "Affiche." DFP II 80, Gold 89.
