PIERRE COMMARMOND (1897-1983) BRIGHTON / LA PLUS CHARMANTE STATION BALNÉAIRE ANGLAISE. Circa 1921.
39 1/4x24 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x62 1/4 cm. Lucien Serre, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; minor restored losses and light foxing in margins; minor creases and restoration in image.
Commarmond was a painter who is best remembered for his plethora of colorful, gently stylized travel posters designed for the French railways in the 1920s and 30s. His combination of realistic detail, graphic embellishment and bright palette help place his work on par with that of Roger Broders and Roger Soubie. This is one of the few images he designed with a central human figure, and one of the very few French posters advertising travel to Britain.
