PIERRE COMMARMOND (1897-1983)

BRIGHTON. Circa 1921.

39x24½ inches, 99x62½ cm. Lucien Serre & Co., Paris.
Condition B+: minor repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds.

Commarmond was a painter who is best remembered for his plethora of colorful, gently-stylized travel posters designed for the French railways in the 1920s and 30s. His combination of realistic detail, graphic embellishment and bright palette help place his work on par with that of Roger Broders and Roger Soubie. This is one of the few images he designed with a central human figure, and one of the very few French posters advertising travel to Britain.
