PIERRE GAUCHAT (1902-1956) BALLY. 1935.
50 1/4x36 1/4 inches, 127 1/2x92 cm. Wolfsburg, Zurich.
Condition B+ / A-: small repaired tears and replaced losses in margins.
Swiss Graphic artist Pierre Gauchat studied under Otto Baumberger and Ernst Zeller, and later opened his own graphic design workshop. This, considered his most famous poster, exemplifies Lucian Bernhard's tradition of Sachplakate - employing one object and one word to advertise a product - although here, Gauchat places the stylish shoe on a detailed carpet. (It is interesting to note that Gauchat also designed carpets). In 1948, Gauchat won the Swiss National Bank's competition to redesign the country's banknotes, illustrating 1000, 500, 100 and 50 franc notes. Rare. We could find no previous examples at auction. With ink stamps from the Kunsthaus Zürich in the bottom right corner. Modern Poster 190, Avant Garde p. 172, Magic of Things 9, MoMA 312.1937.
