Piet Zwart, along with Paul Schuitema, was the leader of the Constructivist movement in Holland. He was a trained and practicing interior designer before he turned to the graphic arts. He had strong connections with many avant-garde movements like de Stijl, and also with artists such as Kurt Schwitters and El Lissitsky, who introduced him to photograms and photomontages. In 1923, Zwart received his first major commission from NKF, the Dutch Cable Factory. He worked with them over the next ten years designing hundreds of brochures and advertisements. A prominent figure in the New Typography movement, Zwart used intricate typographic compositions for the company and also created brilliant photomontages like this one.
