PIPPA SMITH (DATES UNKNOWN)

Another Empty Home.
Screenprint poster. 546x431 mm, 21½x17 inches. [Paddington Print Shop, London], 1976.

Founded in 1974 by John Phillips, the Paddington Print Shop was a North West London-based grassroots, anarchist, "rainbow coalition of left wing activism." Through posters they addressed international issues such the anti-apartheid movement, but also focused locally on housing issues, squatter's rights, real estate development, the Notting Hill Carnival and more.

This poster draws attention to the central contradiction in the still ongoing housing crisis, not just in London, but around the world. How can we as a society allow homes to sit empty as people struggle to find shelter? Paddington would print another poster on the same issue a few years later, with the text "Still Empty!"
