Additional Details

Portia Washington (1883-1978) was the only child of Booker T. Washington. Gifted musically, she was sent to the best schools at home and abroad. In 1900, while still at Tuskegee, she met William Sydney Pittman, then an architecture student and artist. Pittman "fell in love at first sight" and spent the next 7 years in pursuit of his future wife. The identity of Portia as the Tuskegee girl is evident after a comparison of this watercolor portrait with actual photographs of the young beauty.<
