First published in 1704. Having been captured at sea by pirates, Pitts spent some 15 years as a slave in North Africa. Forced to convert to Islam, he was taken by one of his masters to Mecca. "Pitts was the first Englishman to record his own experiences of the pilgrimage to Mecca . . . His book also gave a detailed account of Muslim rituals . . . family life, customs, and cookery" (ODNB).
