PIÈRO COÈLLI (1893-1980)

L'ISTRIEN / (ITALIEN). Circa 1925.

39 1/2x24 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x61 1/2 cm. Grafiche Modiano, Trieste.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins, into image; replaced losses and overpainting in upper right margin; creases in image; fold in lower right corner.

An exceptional poster map incorporating the architectural and natural highlights of the Istrian Peninsula. Planes, boats, trains and cars are depicted flying the routes between the towns and the landmarks. Istria was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until after the First World War, when it was ceded to Italy in 1920. It remained part of the Italian lands until after the Second World War, when it was ceded to Yugoslavia in 1947. It has been a part of Croatia since 1991. This is one of only two known posters the artist designed. The plane appears to be a three-engine variant of the popular flying boat SIAI S.16. Bolaffi p. 63.
