Additional Details

An important mapping of the world, noted for both its accuracy and decorative border. Plancius incorporated many new depictions of regions, particularly the Arctic, based on the recent attempts to discover a Northwest passage, and the Far East, including an accurate mapping of the Korean peninsula and Teixiera’s outline of Japan. Shirley notes that the pictorial border, after De Bry, "established a pattern of cartographical decoration that lasted over a century." Shirley 187.
